Rudy Giuliani, 81, was injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Wednesday, according to a statement from his security guard, Michael Ragusa. The former New York City mayor was struck from behind while driving on a highway, sustaining a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Ragusa’s statement indicated Giuliani had stopped to assist an individual alleging domestic violence shortly before the collision, contacting 911 to render aid. Local police have been contacted for comment.
Giuliani rose to prominence as “America’s Mayor” for his leadership following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center while serving as New York City’s mayor, a position he held as being first elected in 1993.
He later became a prominent figure in national politics, launching an unsuccessful bid for the US presidency in 2008. in subsequent years, he served as an advisor to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and later joined Trump’s personal legal team, remaining in that role through the 2020 election.
Following Joe biden’s victory in the 2020 election, Giuliani publicly promoted unsubstantiated claims of election fraud. Earlier this year, he reached a tentative settlement with two former election workers who had been awarded $148 million (£120 million) in damages after successfully suing him for defamation related to those claims.
