Roma Employment in Hungary: Gains Made,Challenges Remain – World Today News

budapest,Hungary – Recent analysis presented at a major event reveals a complex picture of Roma employment in hungary. While notable progress has been made since the dramatic declines following the change of regime, substantial disparities persist between Roma and the majority population.Dr. Andrea Szegedi,a leading analyst, highlighted the particularly sharp drop in Roma employment following political shifts, with rates plummeting to as low as 22% in 1993 – and a staggering 15% for Roma women. However, data from 2024 paints a more hopeful, though still incomplete, picture.Currently, the employment rate for Roma men stands near 60%, while Roma women’s employment has reached 41%. This represents considerable advancement over previous decades.

despite these gains, key challenges remain. The analysis pinpointed several critical areas needing attention: lower educational attainment within the Roma community, a higher rate of early school leaving, a significant number of individuals classified as “Neet” (Not in Education, Employment or Training – young people not involved in learning, work or training), disadvantages faced by those living in peripheral regions, and ongoing experiences of discrimination.

The presentation underscored the need for continued efforts to address these systemic issues and further integrate the Roma population into the Hungarian workforce. Positive examples where also cited, suggesting that targeted interventions can yield positive results. Keywords: Roma, employment, Hungary, discrimination, education, Neet, workforce, social inclusion.
