The second Röhrl classic is in the starting blocks. After the premiere on the southern edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District, this year the Tauber region with medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber forms the scenic setting for the rally, which is exclusively for Porsche vehicles. At the same time, the date of the new edition is moving forward from late summer to the merry month: between 11th and 13th May, the approximately 750-kilometer route leads through the Tauber and Altmühltal valleys as well as the Upper Palatinate, Franconian Switzerland and the Spessart. Also present again this year, the namesake of the rally: With starting number 1, motorsport legend Walter Röhrl leads the parade of the 140 sports cars of the Stuttgart brand up to and including the year of construction 1998 in a Porsche 993 Turbo.
The Automobile Club of Germany (AvD) is once again sponsoring the Röhrl Classic, both as a media partner and with technical service for the participants during the three driving days. This support will be particularly evident to the general public at the start of the rally (Thursday, May 11) on the historic market square in the small northern Bavarian town of Rothenburg od Tauber. The red and white event trailer is open to all interested parties and offers comprehensive information about the performance and services of Germany’s most traditional automobile club. A comparable performance is also planned for the following day (Friday, May 12) in the small parish village of Brunn, a district of the Heilgenstadt market in Upper Franconia, where more than a thousand spectators are expected, making the village the most crowded waypoint on the rally route should do.
Not only connoisseurs will discover some extraordinary vehicles in the colorful field of participants. For example a rare Porsche 959 S from 1988, the last “surviving” Porsche 356 B 1600 of the Düsseldorf motorway police and the orange-yellow Porsche 914/6 GT in Sunoco design. Also present in the field of the 2nd Röhrl Classic was a short-wheelbase original 911, the particularly sporty ST and Carrera 2.7 RS versions of the Porsche 911, cabriolet and speedster variants, as well as the classic coupé models from the 911, 924, 928, 944 and 968 in a wide variety of paint finishes.
And because the sports cars are known for their high quality and are considered to be particularly reliable, but the entire route poses a challenge, especially for the older models, two AvD breakdown helpers watch over the participants throughout the rally to help with minor or major problems to stand.
