Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes will miss the remainder of the 2025-2026 season, and the upcoming World Cup, after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and external meniscus tear in his right knee, the club confirmed Tuesday.
The injury occurred during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Getafe on Monday, though Rodrygo initially completed the match. Medical examinations conducted Tuesday revealed the extent of the damage, effectively ending his participation in both club and international competition for the foreseeable future.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and a tear of the external meniscus in his right leg,” a club statement read.
The news is a significant blow to the Brazilian national team, with the World Cup scheduled to begin in June. Rodrygo, 23, was expected to play a key role in Brazil’s campaign, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The injury comes just 100 days before the tournament’s opening match, according to reports.
Rodrygo had recently returned to the lineup after a month-long absence due to tendinitis in his right hamstring. His return lasted only 36 minutes against Getafe before the injury occurred. He had also recently served a suspension stemming from a Champions League expulsion.
The injury represents a setback for Rodrygo, who had recently ended a nine-month scoring drought on December 10th. Since joining Real Madrid in 2019, he has been a key contributor, particularly in Champions League play. His market value was estimated at €60 million prior to the injury.
The length of Rodrygo’s rehabilitation is estimated to be at least eight months, potentially ruling him out until January 2027, according to multiple reports. The club has not yet announced a timeline for surgery or the start of his recovery program.
