Rockford News First: Area may break Monday heat record before Friday freeze
Rockford News First reported that temperatures across the stateline will reach near record-breaking warmth on Monday, touching the mid-80s before a dramatic cold front triggers a severe weather risk on Tuesday night and a potential freeze by the end of the week.
Record-Breaking Warmth Reaches the Stateline
The region experienced unseasonably high temperatures topping out nearly 20 degrees above normal in the upper 70s to lower 80s, according to reporting by DJ Baker. Cloud cover overnight acted as a blanket, trapping daytime heat and keeping overnight lows in the lower 60s compared to the historical average high of roughly 65 degrees.
Sunshine will return by late Monday morning, accompanied by southwest wind gusts reaching 20 to 25 mph. These atmospheric factors position the region for a mid-80s peak on Monday afternoon. Baker stated there is a 75% chance the area will break the record high of 85 degrees set in 2008.
Storm Risk Shifts the Weather Pattern Tuesday Night
Tuesday brings continued warm conditions with pleasant sunshine and highs reaching the middle to upper 70s, as detailed by Rockford News First. That pattern breaks overnight Tuesday as a cold front sweeps across the region, sparking scattered showers and thunderstorms.
The southwestern corner of the stateline faces a marginal 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms along the front. However, overall storm energy remains limited due to the timing of the storms and time of year.
Temperature Drop and Frost Threat by Friday
Following the frontal passage, daily highs will descend from near normal on Wednesday and Thursday down to below normal readings by Friday. The transition marks a nearly 55-degree temperature swing over the course of the week.
Overnight lows dropping to freezing or just below freezing by Friday night and into Saturday morning introduce the first threat of a frost or freeze. Outdoor plants might have to be brought inside or covered up.
