Australia’s Minister for Communications has demanded an urgent meeting with video game giant Roblox following reports of child grooming on the platform. Anika Wells, the Australian Minister, also directed the nation’s internet regulator to consider “urgent measures” against the company, according to Australian Broadcasting Corporation reporting.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the safety of children on Roblox, a platform popular with young users that allows them to create and share their own games. Wells stated on ABC television that she, and many others, were “appalled” by reports of young children – some as young as four or five – being exposed to violent and explicit content.
Roblox Corporation, based in the United States, has begun implementing an age verification system using facial recognition technology, initially for chat functions, towards the finish of 2025. The company stated it welcomes the opportunity to discuss the safety measures It’s taking. A spokesperson asserted that Roblox has “robust safety policies and processes” that exceed those of many other platforms.
Despite these measures, Australia is increasing scrutiny. Roblox is currently exempt from Australia’s ban on social media platforms for users under 16, a restriction that applies to TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. However, the platform has been banned in Qatar, Iraq, Turkey, and Egypt, largely due to child safety concerns. The states of Texas and Louisiana in the United States have also launched legal action against Roblox over similar issues, and the Netherlands initiated an investigation in late January to assess risks to minors.
Roblox currently has approximately 150 million daily active users, with those under the age of 13 accounting for nearly 40% of the user base, according to Roblox Corporation data from 2024. The Australian government’s action follows reports in The Guardian detailing disturbing instances of grooming on the platform, prompting the call for a review of Roblox’s current PG rating.
The Commonwealth government has requested a meeting with Roblox representatives to discuss these concerns. As of Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Roblox has not publicly responded to the request for a meeting, nor has the Australian internet regulator announced any specific “urgent measures” under consideration.
