Robert Mueller: Former FBI Director and Russia Probe Lead Dies at 81

March 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, died Friday at the age of 81, his law firm, WilmerHale, confirmed Saturday. No cause of death was immediately disclosed.

Mueller’s career spanned decades of public service, beginning with a three-year stint as a Marine Corps officer in Vietnam, where he received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, and culminating in his appointment as special counsel to investigate potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign. He served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013, taking the helm one week before the September 11th terrorist attacks and overseeing a significant transformation of the bureau’s focus toward counterterrorism.

The investigation, initiated in May 2017 after the firing of FBI Director James Comey by then-President Donald Trump, resulted in charges against 34 individuals, including six Trump associates, and three Russian companies, according to reporting by the Associated Press. These included convictions of Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, and Roger Stone, a longtime political advisor. The investigation detailed a systematic effort by the Russian government to interfere in the election through hacking and the spread of disinformation, aiming to sow discord and damage Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.

Despite establishing numerous links between the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump campaign, Mueller’s report, released in April 2019, did not conclude that the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with Russia in its election interference activities. As he explained during congressional testimony that year, the investigation did not establish sufficient evidence to charge anyone with a criminal conspiracy. Still, the report did lay out ten instances of potential obstruction of justice by President Trump, but declined to build a traditional prosecutorial judgment on whether he had committed a crime, citing Justice Department policy.

The decision not to pursue criminal charges against the president drew sharp criticism from Democrats, who accused Mueller of failing to hold Trump accountable for his actions. Trump, for his part, repeatedly denounced the investigation as a “witch hunt” and attacked Mueller’s integrity. On Saturday, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, stating, “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Prior to leading the FBI, Mueller served as a federal prosecutor, overseeing high-profile cases including the prosecution of crime boss John Gotti and the investigation into the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland. He was appointed FBI director by President George W. Bush and later had his tenure extended by President Barack Obama. During his time at the FBI, Mueller oversaw a restructuring of the agency in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, prioritizing national security and improving intelligence sharing.

Mueller’s appointment as special counsel came after increasing scrutiny of potential Russian interference in the 2016 election and concerns about possible obstruction of justice. The Justice Department’s number-two official, Rod Rosenstein, made the appointment, citing the need for an independent investigation. The Mueller report documented how the Trump campaign “expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts,” referring to hacked Democratic emails, according to the report’s findings.

Following the conclusion of the Mueller investigation, the House of Representatives, then under Democratic control, impeached President Trump twice, though neither impeachment was directly related to the findings of the special counsel’s report. Trump was later pardoned by President Trump for Manafort and Stone, and Flynn.

Robert Mueller is survived by his wife, Ann Cabell Standish, and their two daughters. The Justice Department has not announced any plans for a memorial service.
