DAccording to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the health authorities reported 5,608 new infections with the corona virus for the past 24 hours on Monday morning. On the Monday of the previous week there were 6,729 cases. Since there is usually less testing on the weekends, the numbers are usually lower on Sundays. A total of 2,221,971 people have been infected with the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.
The number of deaths in connection with corona disease rose by 175 to 57,120 compared to the previous day. A week ago on Sunday, 217 deaths had been reported.
The high of 1,244 new deaths was reached on January 14th. Among the new infections registered within 24 hours, the highest value was reported on December 18, at 33,777 – but this included 3500 late reports.
The seven-day incidence, i.e. the number of cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days, was 91 according to the RKI. On Thursday last week, this figure fell below the 100 mark for the first time in three months. The political goal is to keep the seven-day incidence below 50 cases per 100,000 residents, since at this value it is assumed that the health authorities can guarantee contact tracing in the event of infection.
