Renée Green’s “Space Poem #15” to Debut at Western Washington University
Bellingham, WA – Western Washington University (WWU) will unveil a notable new addition to its esteemed public art collection on October 2nd: “Space Poem #15 (To the Remembered Earth)” by internationally acclaimed artist Renée Green. The multi-part installation promises a thought-provoking experience for the WWU community and art enthusiasts alike.
The artwork isn’t confined to a single gallery space. Instead, Green’s piece unfolds across three distinct locations on the WWU campus. Visitors will encounter suspended banners in the skybridge connecting the Academic Instructional Center East and West, double-sided panels gracing the lobby windows of the Interdisciplinary Science building, and further panels displayed in the Western Gallery entry foyer within the Fine Arts Building.
Meet the Artist & Dedication Ceremony
WWU will host an artist talk and dedication event on Thursday, October 2nd, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Academic Instructional Center West on South campus. The dedication ceremony will follow at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, though registration is strongly encouraged via this link.
A Commission Rooted in Washington State
“Space Poem #15” was commissioned by the Washington Arts Commission in partnership with Western Washington University.Funding for the project was generously provided by the Percent-for-Art Program of Washington State, alongside capital funds associated with the recently completed Kaiser borsari building on campus.
Renée Green: A Global Artistic Voice
Renée Green is a highly respected figure in the contemporary art world, working across disciplines as an artist, writer, and filmmaker. Her work has been exhibited globally, with recent solo shows at prestigious institutions including Dia: Beacon in New york and Auroras in São Paulo, Brazil. She has also presented significant solo exhibitions in major cities like Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Boston, San Francisco, and New York.
Currently, Green serves as a professor in the Art, Culture, and Technology program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her accolades include a five-year residency with the Holt/Smithson foundation’s “Island Project” alongside notable artists like Sky Hopinka and Tacita Dean, and the 2023 Linda A. Orzeck ’68 Distinguished Artist-in-Residence. Green’s writng has appeared in leading art publications such as Transition, Frieze, and Texte zur Kunst.
