Record Heat Wave Shatters Records Across the West: March Madness Temperatures & Climate Change Link

March 21, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Record-breaking temperatures are sweeping across the Western United States, shattering daily highs from California to the Central Plains. Hundreds of locations between San Francisco and St. Louis experienced record temperatures on Friday, marking an unusually early and intense heat wave for late March.

The surge in temperatures is attributed to an exceptionally strong ridge of high pressure, creating a “heat dome” characterized by clear skies and light winds. Even as the high-pressure system is expected to weaken in the coming days, temperatures are forecast to remain well above average throughout next week.

The heat began building last weekend, with Sacramento reaching 80 degrees Fahrenheit on March 15th – the first time the city has hit that mark in 2026. This is significantly earlier than the average first 80-degree day, which typically occurs around April 4th. The National Weather Service reported a high of 84 degrees in Sacramento on March 16th, surpassing the previous record of 83 degrees set in 2007.

Tuesday, March 17th, saw records fall across Northern California. San Francisco, Sacramento (reaching 86 degrees), Stockton (87 degrees), Modesto (88 degrees), and South Lake Tahoe (69 degrees) all broke daily records. Stockton’s high tied the city’s all-March record. The following day, March 18th, brought further records. Sacramento reached 88 degrees at Executive Airport, equaling the all-March record from 1988. Stockton (89 degrees) and Modesto (91 degrees) both exceeded their all-March records, with Modesto experiencing its earliest 90-degree day on record. South Lake Tahoe reached 76 degrees, breaking the all-March record and matching its all-April high.

The heat continued unabated on Thursday, March 19th. Sacramento hit 87 degrees, easily surpassing the previous record of 81 degrees set in 2015. Modesto reached 88 degrees, exceeding the previous daily record of 87 degrees from 1960. Stockton’s high of 90 degrees was a new daily record, seven degrees above the previous high. This marked the third consecutive day Stockton set a new all-March record and the earliest 90-degree day in the city’s recorded history. Friday, March 20th, saw Sacramento reach 88 degrees, breaking its 2004 record of 82 degrees. Stockton too hit 88 degrees, while Modesto reached 91 degrees for the second time this week, tying the all-March record. South Lake Tahoe recorded 72 degrees, a new daily record by four degrees.

While the high-pressure system is expected to weaken, record highs remain possible this weekend. Valley temperatures are forecast to be in the low to mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s record temperatures range between 80 and 82 degrees, while Sunday’s are between 83 and 84 degrees. Scattered clouds and a slight onshore breeze may offer some relief in certain areas.

Experts attribute the intensity and duration of this heat wave to the effects of global climate change. NASA data indicates a consistent increase in Earth’s global average temperature since the Industrial Revolution, with the rate of increase nearly doubling in the past 50 years. This warming trend is making extreme heat events more frequent and severe. In the past six years, Sacramento’s Executive Airport has recorded 61 record-high temperatures compared to only six record-low temperatures. Climate Central’s Climate Shift Index indicates that the heat in the Four Corners region this week is five times more likely to occur due to global temperature increases over the past 50 years. The scientific community largely agrees that human greenhouse gas emissions are the primary driver of these rising temperatures.
