“Ready or Not” Grapples with Content Changes Amidst Player Uproar
The tactical shooter game “Ready or Not” is facing backlash after implementing a “screen review” mechanism to comply with console ESRB ratings, sparking controversy among its player base.
Content Adjustments for Console Release
To ensure cross-platform consistency and meet ESRB requirements for its console release, VOID Interactive has made some adjustments to “Ready or Not.” According to the developers, while the core gunfight mechanics and bloody scenes remain, dismemberment of enemy corpses has been removed.
Additionally, the update removes nude images and any implications of child sexual abuse, replacing NPCs lying in bed with those in sleeping positions. The developers, including a Kaminsky from Void, have stressed that these are “just a few minor adjustments”
necessary to abide by game specifications.
Player Discontent and Boycotts
Despite the official explanation, many players remain unconvinced. The game’s Steam review score has plummeted, with some users launching boycotts and demanding the restoration of the removed content. The Entertainment Software Ratings Board, which the developers cite as the reason for the changes, estimates that they cover 83% of the console market in the United States, making their rulings significant for game distribution (ESRB, 2023).
Potential Mod Support
In response to the negative feedback, VOID Interactive is considering alternatives. Kaminsky, a developer at Void, suggested that players could use mods to reinstate the original content, though this would prevent cross-platform play with consoles. For PC-only players, this may offer a compromise.
