Rare Pregnancies Occur After Unconventional Routes, Experts Say

Lancaster University Professor Adam Taylor highlights that while most pregnancies result from vaginal intercourse, extremely rare cases demonstrate option pathways to conception. These unusual scenarios, recently brought to light, involve pregnancies occurring after anal or oral encounters.
Pregnancy Following Oral Encounter reported in lesotho Teen
A case published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology details the pregnancy of a 15-year-old girl from Lesotho born with Mullerian Agenesis, a condition resulting in the absence of a vagina. Doctors discovered her pregnancy during a consultation for abdominal pain, nine months after she received oral sex and was subsequently stabbed in the stomach by a former partner. The injury allowed sperm to enter her body and fertilize an egg, leading to a healthy baby delivered via Cesarean section.
Congenital Anomaly Allows Pregnancy After Anal Encounter
Pregnancy can also occur after anal intercourse in women with a rare congenital anomaly called cloacal malformation, affecting approximately one in 50,000 individuals. this malformation creates an opening between the rectum and vagina, providing a pathway for sperm to reach the ovum.
“Super Sperm” and Superfection: Additional Rare Pathways
Even a simple splash of sperm onto the external genitals can, in exceptionally rare instances, lead to pregnancy. Despite sperm having a limited survival time outside the body (around 30 minutes, traveling at approximately 5 mm per minute), a particularly resilient “super sperm” can perhaps reach the egg. Moreover, a phenomenon called superfection – a double pregnancy occurring when a second ovulation isn’t blocked after a first conception – can result in the simultaneous birth of babies, resembling twins, and is more common in women undergoing in vitro fertilization.
Professor Taylor emphasizes, “These examples are of course extremely rare” and reassures the public, “So you don’t need to worry.” He concludes with a reminder: “However, if you are not trying to get pregnant anytime soon, be sure to use contraception.”
