Sinner Advances to US Open Semifinals, eyes Grand Slam Title Repeat
NEW YORK – Jannik Sinner, currently ranked fifth in the world, secured his place in the US Open semifinals Wednesday with a dominant 6-1,6-4,6-2 victory over fellow Italian Lorenzo musetti. The win marks Sinner’s second consecutive Grand Slam semifinal appearance, setting the stage for a potential championship run at the season’s final major.
Sinner’s commanding performance underscores his status as a leading contender in men’s tennis and fuels his quest for back-to-back US open titles. Having claimed the championship last year with a decisive win over Taylor Fritz (6-3, 6-4, 7-5), the 22-year-old is now within striking distance of adding another grand Slam trophy to his collection. This year’s tournament is particularly significant as Sinner aims to become the first player since Roger Federer in 2007 to win consecutive US Open titles.
The Italian will face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 27) in the semifinals, who overcame Alex de Minaur (ATP 8) in a hard-fought quarterfinal match, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-4).
Women’s Semifinals Set After Anisimova, Osaka Victories
On the women’s side, American Amanda Anisimova and Japan’s Naomi Osaka both advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday. Anisimova (WTA 9) delivered a statement win against Poland’s Iga Świątek (WTA 2), prevailing 6-4, 6-3. The victory is particularly resonant for Anisimova, who avenged a lopsided loss to Świątek in the Wimbledon final just two months prior.
“I am special to return this way from Wimbledon,” Anisimova said after her win. “I’ve worked hard to recover from it. This day is really special.”
Osaka (WTA 24) will be Anisimova’s semifinal opponent, having defeated Karolina Muchova (WTA 13) with scores of 7-6 (7-3),6-6 (7-3).
The US Open Championship, played on hard courts, will conclude on Sunday. Last year’s women’s singles champion was Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, who defeated Jessica Pegula in the final, 7-5, 7-5.
