The Shaler Area High School football team concluded its season with a second-round playoff loss to Pine Richland, ending a campaign marked by a significant turnaround and a return to postseason play for the first time since 2019. The Titans, after starting the season with a 1-6 record, rallied to win two of their final three games, securing a playoff berth.
Head coach Jim Ryan credited senior quarterback Aaron Aversa as pivotal to the team’s resurgence. Aversa, who delivered nine passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns throughout the season, was lauded for his resilience and team-focused approach. “I had 100% confidence in Aaron, that he was going to lead this team to where it needed to be,” Ryan said. “He is just a resilient guy. He’s selfless, and he is everything you would want out of a starting quarterback. He never made it about himself. It was always about the team. We knew that he was going to be the guy to take charge.”
Early in the season, the Titans’ offense relied heavily on the running game, with running backs Isaac McKay and Avery Kinter contributing significantly. Both players also made key defensive plays, including a fumble recovery by Kinter and multiple crucial stops on fourth down by McKay. The team faced early setbacks, including a three-game losing streak against Butler, South Fayette, and Hampton, with the Hampton loss decided by a field goal scored with just six seconds remaining.
Shaler secured its first win of the season in week four, defeating Plum 27-20. The team’s playoff run ended with the loss to Pine Richland, but the season is viewed as a success due to the program’s return to competitiveness and the leadership demonstrated by Aversa and other key players.
