Rail safety Week 2025: A Call for Vigilance on Canada‘s tracks
ottawa, Ontario – September 15, 2025 – As Canada observes Rail Safety week 2025, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of transport and Internal Trade, today underscored the vital role railways play in connecting communities and the ongoing commitment to ensuring safety across the nation’s extensive rail network.
For generations, Canada’s railways have been integral to the country’s development, weaving a network that links families and facilitates commerce. With many Canadians residing near railway lines, awareness and caution are paramount.
Minister Freeland acknowledged the crucial work of organizations like Operation Lifesaver Canada, which spearheads annual awareness campaigns during Rail Safety Week. These efforts are focused on reducing the tragically frequent incidents of fatalities and injuries that occur along Canadian rail lines.The dedication of groups such as Canadian Safety Train Express and the railways themselves, through year-round outreach programs, was also highlighted.
The government of Canada is actively investing in rail safety through programs like the Rail Safety Improvement Program. This initiative provides funding and support to communities and railway companies to enhance safety features at crossings and along rail corridors. Transport Canada inspectors diligently monitor and enforce stringent safety standards nationwide, acting as a key regulator within the rail sector.
While Canada boasts one of the safest rail networks globally, complacency is not an option. Minister Freeland emphasized the importance of individual vigilance around trains and tracks. ”Canadians can directly contribute to rail safety in their communities simply by paying careful attention when approaching crossings or being near railway tracks,” she stated.
