Rafael Camara to Join Haas for 2027 Formula 1 Debut
Rafael Camara Secures 2027 Formula 1 Seat with Haas
Brazilian driver Rafael Camara will make his Formula 1 debut with the US-based Haas team in 2027, the team announced. Camara, who is currently leading the Formula 2 championship and won the 2025 Formula 3 title with Trident, was selected following a selection process that assessed four different drivers in previous years’ F1 machinery.
Performance-Driven Selection at Portimao
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu stated that pure performance served as the decisive factor in choosing the 21-year-old Ferrari Driver Academy member. Camara, alongside reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and Haas reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa, underwent testing at Portugal’s Portimao track in August, while fellow reserve Jack Doohan was assessed separately. Komatsu noted that Camara posted the quickest times during the evaluations.
According to Ayao Komatsu, every driver evaluated brought financial backing to the table, but team management chose Camara purely based on his lap times and adaptability. Komatsu remarked that Camara displayed incredible natural speed and handled himself impressively despite having limited time to learn the car.
Camara Joins Haas as Brazil Gains Two Drivers
Camara steps into the seat left vacant by Frenchman Esteban Ocon, whose departure at the end of the current season was confirmed by Haas last month. While Haas has not yet formally announced who will pilot their second car for the upcoming campaign, Komatsu indicated that finalizing details with Britain’s Oliver Bearman for a third season is merely a matter of timing.
The signing is a major achievement for Brazilian motorsport. With Camara joining the grid alongside Gabriel Bortoleto, who retains his seat at Audi, Brazil will feature two drivers in Formula 1 for the first time since Felipe Massa and Felipe Nasr competed in 2016.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Camara acknowledged team owner Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for their trust while shifting his immediate focus toward preparation. Haas currently sits seventh in the constructors’ standings with 30 points heading into the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, scheduled for October 25.
