Annett Kaufmann reaches first European table tennis semi-finals
By Alex Carter – Sport Editor
Annett Kaufmann won her quarter-final match against her national team colleague in Ljubljana in 4:0 sets, thus reaching the singles semi-final of a European Championship for the first time in the women’s category.
Revenge in Ljubljana
The 20-year-old former junior world champion secured her advancement in Slovenia after overcoming a prior 0:3 defeat against Ying Han at the Champions tournament in Frankfurt the previous year.
Kaufmann noted the impact of her training over the preceding six months, stating that she is now capable of maintaining high-quality play through the end of a major tournament.
Guaranteed Podium Finish
Following this victory, Kaufmann is guaranteed at least a bronze medal. This marks her second medal of the championship after a third-place finish in the doubles competition.
Unlike Olympic tournaments, European table tennis championships do not feature a third-place playoff match. Both semi-final losers are awarded bronze.

Teammate Showdown on Sunday
Kaufmann will face her regular doubles partner, Nina Mittelham, in the semi-final scheduled for Sunday at 12:15 CEST, broadcast via Dyn.
Mittelham advanced to the semi-final round by defeating Romania’s Bernadette Szöcs 4:1. This brings her total medal count at the event to three following a gold in mixed doubles and bronze alongside Kaufmann.
