Pulse Wave Viewer: Estimate Blood Pressure Using Your Smartphone Camera
A fresh healthcare application called Pulse Wave Viewer has been released for iOS and Android, enabling users to estimate their blood pressure and heart rate using only a smartphone camera.
The application utilizes a technology known as remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). This method allows the software to detect subtle changes in blood volume and pulse waveforms by analyzing the user’s face through the camera lens, eliminating the need for physical contact or external sensors.
To generate a reading, users are required to appear into the smartphone camera for approximately 30 seconds. During this process, the app provides a real-time visualization of the pulse wave, allowing users to see the waveform as the data is being captured and analyzed.
Upon completion of the scan, Pulse Wave Viewer provides estimates for systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate. The app includes functionality to save these measurements, enabling users to maintain a history of their readings and monitor cardiovascular trends over time.
The developers have clarified that Pulse Wave Viewer is not a certified medical device. The tool is intended for general health management and reference purposes rather than for clinical diagnosis or medical treatment.
The application is currently available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
