Puerto Rican Students Develop AI for Agriculture, Space Exploration
BAYAMÓN, Puerto Rico - Students at Bayamón‘s Engine 4 technology and research laboratory are pioneering artificial intelligence projects with potential applications ranging from bolstering local agriculture too aiding future planetary exploration. The “Messar” and “agrobrain” initiatives, unveiled recently alongside Bayamón mayor ramón Luis Rivera, demonstrate a commitment to technological innovation emerging from the municipality.
Launched in 2016 within a repurposed civil defense building, Engine 4 has quickly become a hub for cutting-edge research, even providing crucial operational support to 100 companies in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. These latest projects signal a broader ambition: to position Puerto Rico as a key player in the global technology landscape and address critical challenges facing both the island and the world. The work underscores a growing recognition of AI’s potential to revolutionize industries and expand the boundaries of human knowledge.
“Agrobrain” utilizes artificial intelligence to optimize agricultural practices, offering solutions for crop monitoring, resource management, and yield prediction. The “Messar” project focuses on developing AI systems capable of analyzing data relevant to space exploration, perhaps assisting in tasks such as planetary mapping and resource identification.
Mayor Ramón Luis rivera lauded Engine 4’s achievements, emphasizing the importance of integrating technology into the city’s future. ”Those who do not insert themselves into the trends of the future, are going to be well behind. those who do not insert themselves in the field of technology, so they will not be able to get jobs,” he stated.
