Prince William Reveals Children’s Newfound Gratitude for ‘Fawlty Towers‘ at Conservation Awards
LONDON – The Prince of Wales shared his family’s recent revelation of the classic British sitcom Fawlty Towers with its star, John Cleese, at the Tusk Conservation Awards held Tuesday evening. William told Cleese his children are currently “enjoying it all over again,” calling the show “brilliant.”
The exchange occurred at an event celebrating conservation efforts in Africa, where William underscored the urgency of protecting wildlife and biodiversity for future generations. The Tusk Conservation Awards recognize individuals making significant contributions to African conservation, with this year’s winners including Laban Mwangi (Kenya), Rahima Njaidi (Tanzania), and Kumara Wakjira (Ethiopia). The Prince emphasized that collective action is crucial, stating, “If we all want to continue to enjoy and benefit from the wonders of the natural world we must not be the generation that stands by as wildlife and biodiversity disappears.”
Cleese, a long-time ambassador for the Tusk Trust, noted the show’s enduring appeal, explaining, “I always explain it’s about ’who’s scared of who’ and kids pick that up instantly. And mine, all those years ago, grew up watching it.” He attended the awards with his wife, Jennifer Wade.
Other notable guests included Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, Zara tindall and her husband Mike, and William’s cousins Lady Amelia and Lady Eliza Spencer. The event highlighted the work of the Tusk Conservation Trust, which supports conservation initiatives across Africa. William added that the award recipients “should inspire us to drive change.”
