Former Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, Thames Valley Police confirmed. The arrest, part of an ongoing investigation, comes after photos emerged showing police activity at his residence at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
Police stated a man in his 60s was taken into custody from Norfolk and that searches were being conducted at addresses in both Berkshire and Norfolk. While authorities have not publicly named the individual, the statement released by Thames Valley Police aligns with reports identifying the arrestee as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. “We will not be naming the arrested man, as per national guidance,” the statement read. “Please also remember that this case is now active so care should be taken with any publication to avoid being in contempt of court.”
Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the investigation. “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office,” Wright said. “It is critical that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence. We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”
The investigation follows recent reports concerning emails suggesting that, while serving as Britain’s envoy for international trade, Andrew shared confidential information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. King Charles III earlier this month indicated his willingness to “support” the police inquiry into these claims, according to reports from the BBC and Reuters.
Andrew was previously stripped of his royal titles and removed from royal duties last year in the wake of the scandal surrounding his association with Epstein. He was also asked to vacate the Royal Lodge, his former residence.
Buckingham Palace has not yet issued a comment regarding the arrest. The arrested man remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
