Poprad Fire: 150 People Displaced After Devastating Blaze

Firefighters Respond to Major Blaze in Spišský Štiavnik

A meaningful fire has devastated a section of Spišský Štiavnik, destroying 11 structures and leaving approximately 150 residents without housing. The blaze,which began in a wooden hut,rapidly consumed adjacent dwellings due to the flammable materials used in their construction.Firefighters from Popradský, Hranovnice, Vikartovce, and Liptovská Teplička worked to extinguish the flames, with police present to manage the scene.

The rapid spread of the fire and heavy smoke forced immediate evacuations, with locals witnessing their homes engulfed by flames. The affected buildings, described as simple wooden and sheet metal constructions, collapsed quickly. While the fire has been extinguished, several dwellings and all their contents were completely destroyed.

Two individuals sustained injuries in the incident, though the extent of their injuries is not yet known. The fire impacted both makeshift huts and brick houses. The cause of the fire and the total damage are currently under investigation.

In response to the displacement, Mayor Matúš Korheľ stated that around 150 people have lost their homes. Temporary accommodation is being provided at the local community center, with efforts underway to gather essential supplies like blankets and mattresses.Assistance has also been pledged by the district office, the Office of the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for the Roma Communities, and the Labor Office.The community center is currently housing 74 individuals, including 16 children, with others finding shelter with relatives.
