Poor Things: 13 BAFTA Nominations & Film Success

Ryan Coogler’s supernatural horror film, Sinners, has made history at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards, becoming the most decorated film by a Black director, according to reports from the ceremony in London on Sunday.

The film, starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, earned multiple awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler himself, who admitted he “didn’t expect” the win. Sinners was nominated in 13 categories securing its place as the second-most nominated film at the awards.

Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta during the Jim Crow South, Sinners follows twin brothers, played by Jordan, as they confront a supernatural evil upon returning to their hometown. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller and Delroy Lindo.

Produced by Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Ryan Coogler through Proximity Media, Sinners was acquired for distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures following a competitive bidding process in February 2024. Principal photography took place between April and July of the same year.

Ludwig Göransson, a frequent collaborator with Coogler, composed the film’s score and also served as an executive producer. Sinners premiered at AMC Lincoln Square in Latest York City on April 3, 2025, before its wider theatrical release in the United States on April 18, 2025.

The film’s commercial success has reached $369 million worldwide, generated from a production budget of $90–100 million. The BAFTA wins are expected to bolster the film’s momentum heading into the upcoming Academy Awards season.
