Detroit Lakes Gymnastics: Back-to-Back State Champions & Maggie Schander’s Gold Medal Sweep

February 23, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

ST. PAUL, MN – Maggie Schander, a senior at Detroit Lakes High School, cemented her status as a gymnastics powerhouse Saturday, claiming four gold medals at the Minnesota State High School League’s Class A Individual and All-Around Championships at Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Schander’s victories in the All-Around, Balance Beam, Uneven Bars, and Vault underscored a dominant performance for the Lakers, who also secured their seventh state championship as a team on Friday.

Schander’s all-around score propelled her to the top of the podium, even as her individual event wins showcased her versatility and precision. She added a silver medal in the Floor Exercise to her collection, falling just short of a perfect five-for-five showing. The Detroit Lakes team, led by Schander, finished Friday’s competition with a lead of over three points, continuing a period of success that saw them win state titles from 2015 through 2019.

The individual competition also highlighted the achievements of other Detroit Lakes gymnasts. Senior Olivia Gag finished fifth in the Floor Exercise, and senior Addy Laux placed seventh on the Uneven Bars. Laux’s performance concluded with a poignant moment, as a mix-up during the awards ceremony led to a brief but emotional period of uncertainty regarding her medal placement. Despite the confusion, Laux expressed pride in her team and her final performance as a Laker.

Elsewhere in the state meet, Lauren Hansen of Monticello won the Class 2A all-around title, having previously won the Class 1A title in 2025 before Monticello’s reclassification. Hansen’s victory reflects a unique achievement, as she joins a select group of gymnasts who have won all-around titles in both Class 1A and 2A.

The Detroit Lakes gymnastics team’s back-to-back state championships mark a period of sustained excellence for the program. The team will look to continue its success in future competitions.
