No Charges Filed Against Former THE BOYZ Member
Investigation into prostitution allegations dropped due to insufficient evidence.
Ju Haknyeon, formerly of the South Korean boy band THE BOYZ, will not face prosecution on prostitution charges after an investigation was dismissed. The Seoul Gangnam Police Station confirmed the decision, bringing an end to the recent controversy.
Key Development
Allegations surfaced in May, claiming that Ju Haknyeon met with a former Japanese adult video actress, Asuka Kirara, at a private bar located in Tokyo. The controversy resulted in Ju Haknyeon‘s departure from THE BOYZ after his contract was terminated.
Following his dismissal, suspicions arose that Ju Haknyeon had engaged in sexual relations with Asuka Kirara, allegations he vehemently denied. He also questioned the circumstances surrounding the termination of his contract and announced plans to sue his accuser for spreading false information.
A formal complaint requesting an investigation into the prostitution allegations against Ju Haknyeon and his agency was officially filed on June 19. However, authorities have decided to dismiss the case.
According to police, the accusations originated from an internet article, offering insufficient specific details or circumstances to justify initiating a formal investigation.
The accuser criticized the decision, stating, “In the past, there were several cases where agencies launched formal investigations into cases based on media reports. This case is also reported on the same standards, and it is a shame that the police decided to dismiss the case simply because the requirements to start one were insufficient.”
The accuser further asserted, “I would like to make it clear that since the authorities have not determined that the accusation is false, it does not meet the legal requirements for a false accusation.”
Precedent
In similar cases, South Korean authorities have taken action based on less substantial evidence. According to a 2024 report by the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center, approximately 60% of online defamation cases related to sexual offenses resulted in investigations, even when direct evidence was limited (KSVRC).
This trend underscores the complexities involved in balancing the rights of the accused with the need to address potential harm caused by online accusations.
