The statement, issued November 21, 2025, comes amid heightened community discussion sparked by citizen complaints and social media posts questioning police conduct during several recent arrests.
Meyer’s defense addresses concerns about officer responses during encounters on November 8th and November 15th, both resulting in reported injuries to individuals taken into custody. He emphasized the inherent risks faced by law enforcement and the split-second decisions officers must make in dynamic situations. The chief stated a thorough internal review of both incidents was conducted, confirming officers adhered to established protocols regarding de-escalation tactics and the appropriate use of force.
“Our officers are dedicated to serving and protecting this community, and they do so with professionalism and courage,” Meyer said in a prepared statement. “They are trained to use the minimum amount of force necessary to gain compliance and ensure the safety of themselves and others.”
The incidents under review involved arrests for alleged operating a vehicle under the influence and resisting arrest. Meyer acknowledged the injuries sustained by those arrested but maintained they were a direct result of the individuals’ resistance and attempts to evade officers. he further noted that body camera footage from both encounters supports the officers’ accounts. The Fort dodge police Department’s use-of-force policy aligns with state and federal guidelines, emphasizing de-escalation techniques and a progressive response to resistance. The department provides ongoing training to officers on these principles, as well as crisis intervention and implicit bias awareness. Meyer stated the department welcomes constructive feedback from the community and remains committed to transparency and accountability. He encouraged anyone with concerns about police conduct to file a formal complaint through the department’s established process.
