Police Arrest Two Suspects Near Kempton Park Voting Station After Chase
Two suspects were arrested near the Cresslawn Primary School voting station in Kempton Park on Monday afternoon after a high-speed police chase disrupted local government election proceedings, The Citizen reported. The incident unfolded as residents arrived to cast their ballots, with special votes taking place ahead of Wednesday’s general poll.
Police Corner Vehicle Near Ward 17 Voting Station
Officers patrolling the area spotted a suspicious vehicle whose driver executed a sudden U-turn and accelerated away from the checkpoint. Democratic Alliance ward councillor and candidate Simon Lapping witnessed the ensuing pursuit and subsequent apprehension.
The police spotted him, and he immediately made a U-turn and took off,
Lapping said, noting that the vehicle raced around Cresswell before law enforcement cornered it two houses down from where witnesses stood.
Voters observing the commotion experienced an unexpected disruption to the electoral process. It’s a stormy afternoon but admission to this sideshow was free,
Lapping said.
Police Arrest Driver and Passenger at Scene
Officers took the driver and passenger into custody at the scene before transporting their vehicle to the local police station for further inquiry. Lapping praised the speed and execution of the responding officers.
It was very quick, very good, and the police did their job,
Lapping said, emphasizing the need for continued suburban patrols. This is what we expect from excellent law enforcement. We need more visible policing and more patrol in the suburbs, more vehicles on the road.
Special voting procedures continue on Tuesday for eligible South Africans unable to reach polling stations on Wednesday.
