Honolulu Police Arrest Man After Kailua Barricade and Shooting at Officers
Honolulu Police Arrest 43-Year-Old Man After Kailua Barricade and Officer-Involved Shooting
A 43-year-old man was arrested in Kailua on Wednesday night, following a domestic abuse incident that escalated into a barricade situation and an exchange where he allegedly fired a long gun at responding officers, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. Officers from the Honolulu Police Department responded shortly after 9 p.m. to the top of Akiikii Place in the Enchanted Lake neighborhood after receiving a report of domestic abuse.
Response and Arrest on Akiikii Place
The initial call involved a 43-year-old suspect and a 42-year-old female victim, according to police records. The woman had already fled the scene before officers arrived at the property. Police first contacted the man, then located the female victim elsewhere in the neighborhood. She told responding personnel that the man had physically abused her.
When officers returned to the residence to detain the suspect, he emerged carrying a long gun. He fired several rounds toward the officers before retreating back inside the home. The Honolulu Police Department deployed its Specialized Services Division to manage the barricade. After negotiations, officers made contact with the man and persuaded him to surrender peacefully.
Police initially listed the suspect’s age as 55 before issuing a correction to 43. Authorities booked him on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, reckless endangering, and abuse of a family or household member. He remained in police custody pending investigation on Thursday morning.
Public Safety Reassurance from Chief David Lazar
The investigation prompted a public safety alert around 10:30 p.m. advising residents to avoid Akiikii Place.
“We understand that incidents like these can raise concerns about public safety in our community,” Honolulu Police Chief David Lazar stated following the incident. “I want to reassure the public that the Honolulu Police Department remains committed to protecting our residents and responding to calls when our community needs it most. I also want to commend the responding officers for their courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to protecting the people we serve.”
