From September 4 to 13, the annual international poetry festival “Poetry Days” will take place in Riga and elsewhere in Latvia. In turn, this month – until August 14 – it is possible to apply for a collection of poems for the Poetry Days Award, the organizers of the event announced.
For 55 years, Poetry Days have been one of the most important September events in the cultural life of Riga and Latvia. Also this year, Poetry Days will bring together poets and poetry lovers, both allowing you to enjoy traditional Poetry Days events and offering new formats for listening to and perceiving poetry. On its 55th anniversary, Poetry Days also received a gift – visual identities created by the artist Alexei Murashko and a renewed logo based on Rainis’ handwriting.
This is the third year since the organization of the Poetry Days has been in the hands of the specially established Poetry Days Council; This year, the members of the council Arno Jundzeme, Erika Bērziņa, Aivars Eipurs and Jelena Budanceva have also been joined by the poet Henrik Elias Zegner. He is also the author of this year’s slogan “Poetry Heals!”, Which will invite you to look at both the festival and poetry as a healing phenomenon for individuals and society.
For the second year in a row, the festival will have its own embassy in the floating art center “Noass” on the AB dam, where several festival events will take place, including opening, discussions and workshops. Currently, more than 25 events are planned in the official program in Riga, but everyone is invited until September 1 to apply its Poetry Days events taking place both in Riga and in the regions, which will be added to the festival’s satellite program. We are also pleased to announce that our international neighbors from the Baltic States will add an international note to the festival program this year.
And the Poetry Days Prize this year will also be: by August 14, the Latvian Writers’ Union invites to apply for poetry collections for the Poetry Days Prize, which will be presented to one collection of original poetry or coolness published in Latvia in Latvian during the last year. The amount of the prize is 1000 EUR, but the nominees will be given the opportunity to spend a month at Dubulti Writers’ House. The award will be presented at the closing event of the Poetry Day at the National Library of Latvia on September 13. More about applying here.
The festival program will be announced in mid-August; You can follow the current events on the Poetry Days website dzejasdienas.com, as well as on social media Facebook a Instagram. Poetry Days are organized by the Latvian Writers’ Union, but supported by the State Cultural Capital Foundation and the Riga City Council Education, Culture and Sports Department.
