Pocheon Animal Sanctuary: A Warm Winter Escape in Korea

Pocheon, South Korea is promoting itself as a destination for travelers with pets, following its designation as a “Pet-Friendly Tourism City” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization in 2024. The city has opened a “Pet Welcome Center” as part of the initiative, offering amenities for both animals and their owners.

Located at 218 Art Valley-ro, Sinbuk-myeon, the Pet Welcome Center features both indoor and outdoor play areas designated for small and large dogs, according to city officials. The center also showcases merchandise related to pet travel and includes a photo zone for visitors. It operates daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The designation and subsequent development of pet-friendly infrastructure aim to attract a growing segment of travelers who include their animals in their vacation plans. Pocheon is highlighting several attractions as being accessible to visitors with pets, including Sanjeong Lake, Bidulgi Falls, and the Hantan River Sky Bridge. Other locations include Hantan River Ecological Park, Baekun Valley, Herb Island, Pocheon Island, Cheonggye Lake, and Gomohosu Park, though specific regulations for each location vary.

The city’s efforts are centered around the slogan “A travel destination where all pets are happy,” and the Pet Welcome Center can be reached at 031-535-5068. The initiative builds on the increasing popularity of pet ownership in South Korea and a corresponding demand for travel options that accommodate animals. The privately-owned My Animal Story at Pyenggang Land also offers animal encounters and botanical gardens, and is a popular destination for families.
