Balearic Islands: Parent Banned From Sports Facilities After Soccer Violence

February 27, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

A ban on parents attending sports facilities across the Balearic Islands has been issued following an alleged physical assault during a National Youth League soccer match in Alcúdia. The sanction, believed to be the first of its kind in the region, comes amid growing concern over escalating violence and unsportsmanlike conduct at youth sporting events.

The initial incident in Alcúdia prompted the unprecedented ban, but it is not an isolated case. A separate incident this weekend at the Can Misses facilities in Ibiza saw a referee suspend a youth match due to verbal attacks from spectators, directed both at the referee and opposing fans.

Local residents expressed varied opinions on the ban. Daniel Garrido stated, “It’s incredibly good that measures like this are adopted as you have to go watch football, not to mess it up. If you go to football to create trouble, why go? Stay at home.” He added a broader critique, noting, “I don’t like football, because there is an attitude that is a little toxic.”

Hugo Perales agreed with the sentiment, stating that individuals who disrupt sporting events should be barred from attending. “If you mess up in football, you can’t go back to a field or a sports facility. It depends a lot on the person, but many people get carried away and cross the line. Football and sports are to be enjoyed, and if you’re going to generate conflict, better not go.”

However, not all residents supported the measure. Silvina Evangelista, a parent, expressed reservations, stating, “Those attitudes should not be allowed anywhere, especially with children present. However, I don’t know if the best sanction was not to let him enter. We would have to analyze the case in depth, know the causes of this violence, but violence must be avoided at all costs.” She as well highlighted the pressure parents sometimes place on young athletes, saying, “I am a mother of a girl, and in her sport that doesn’t happen. In football, parents put a lot of pressure on them and want everyone to be professionals, and that is very negative.”

Lordin voiced concerns about fairness, arguing, “In football there is a lack of respect. Football as a sport is good, but there’s no need to fight or insult each other. I think this measure they have adopted is not appropriate. If the father wants to go spot his son or daughter, he has every right, but if you cause controversy it is normal.” He added, “all they do is provide a very terrible example to children, and that cannot be.”

Nuria Escudeto, a soccer player herself, confirmed that disruptive behavior is a recurring problem. “These types of attitudes are seen recurrently. I think it’s good that measures like these are adopted because they are things that young children should not see. There are always many insults. The parents do not realize what they are causing by insulting other parents and the referees, and thus the children do not enjoy it. Many times even coaches participate.” She called for increased enforcement, stating, “There should be more measures like these.”

Leonard Lucas, who witnessed a racist incident at a match, strongly supported the ban. “Parents have to set an example for children, and in this way, only a negative example is set. It’s shameful. When I experienced that racist incident, I thought it couldn’t be true, and that it can’t happen here, or at the Bernabéu, or anywhere.”

Ramon Cortes offered a dissenting view, characterizing the incidents as “a small discussion” and the ban as “a little exaggerated. Other types of measures could be taken, because this is too much. I do not believe that the atmosphere in football is toxic, but that it’s very competitive.”

The incidents and the subsequent ban have sparked a debate within Ibizan society, with opinions divided on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the measure. As of today, no further details regarding the specific Alcúdia incident or the duration of the ban have been released by local authorities.
