Private Health Insurance Premiums Show Modest increase Amidst Shifting Market Dynamics

In a recent analysis of private health insurance tariffs, Morgen & Morgen (M&M) has reported a slight increase in premium stability for the upcoming year, wiht an estimated 3.54 percent rise. This figure follows a trend of fluctuating premium adjustments in recent years, including 2.79 percent in 2024, 2.04 percent in 2023, 2.07 percent in 2022, 2.53 percent in 2021, and 1.77 percent in 2020. The average of relative contributions within the new vintage of tariffs exhibits a wide range, from a decrease of 0.16 percent to an increase of 8.89 percent.

Thorsten Bohrmann, Senior Insurance analyst at M&M, highlighted a notable shift in tariff ratings. While 369 tariffs still maintain “excellent” and “very good” classifications, there’s an overall trend towards lower ratings, with a particular increase in the proportion of two-star tariffs. This recalibration comes as M&M has raised its star classification benchmarks by 0.5 percentage points, citing medical advancements, market volatility, and high inflation as contributing factors.

Insurers Ranked by Premium Stability

The analysis also revealed significant disparities in premium stability among private health insurers, based on the range of rating results across their tariff offerings. Ottonova stands out as the sole provider to achieve a five-star rating for all examined tariffs.Insurers with the narrowest rating spread, indicating consistent performance across their plans, include Allianz Private Health Insurance and Generali Deutschland Krankenversicherung AG, both receiving three stars. Debeka Health Insurance Association AG also demonstrated a tight rating range, albeit with a lower one-star classification.

In addition to Debeka, Barmenia Krankenversicherung AG (with one or two-star ratings) and the State Hospital VVAG (LKH) experienced relatively substantial premium adjustments.

Conversely, ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG, AXA Krankenversicherung AG, Bavarian Civil Servant Health Insurance AG (BBKK), Gothaer Krankenversicherung AG, Hallesche Krankenversicherung AG, Inter Krankenversicherung AG, Süddeutsche Krankenversicherung AG (Sdk), Signal Iduna Krankenversicherung AG, and Universa Krankenversicherung AG exhibited the widest scatter in their rating grades, with tariff combinations spanning from one to five stars.
