Pennsylvania Cellphone Ban: Schools Consider Classrooms Restriction

by Emma Walker – News Editor

A statewide standard for cellphone use in Pennsylvania classrooms is under‍ consideration ⁢as lawmakers return from summer recess. The proposed legislation aims to reduce⁢ distractions and improve‌ learning by requiring students ‌to lock away ⁣their cellphones‌ during school hours. Rep. Mandy ‌Steele, D-Allegheny County, the bill’s‌ sponsor, said a “statewide standard saying that⁤ we cannot‌ allow children to have ‌access to a smartphone or cellphones ‍in class makes a whole ⁣lot ⁤of sense.” ⁣The bill includes exceptions for ⁢students with family members who have medical conditions, volunteer fire company members and first responders, ⁣or those with permission from a school ⁢administrator. School districts would⁤ need to submit plans to the‌ state on ⁢how they intend to implement and‍ enforce the restrictions. East Pennsboro Area School District Superintendent Michael Robinson acknowledged the ⁤challenges of implementing a blanket ban, noting that a⁤ single cellphone infraction could cost staff significant time.he ⁢suggested targeting legislation rather than a broad ban.
