Friborg Canton to Assess Digital Wellbeing Support for families
FRIBOURG – The Fribourg cantonal government will undertake a comprehensive review of existing digital wellbeing programs for children and adolescents, spurred by concerns from professionals regarding the rapidly evolving digital landscape. The move comes in response to a postulate filed by PLR deputies Sophie Moura and Verte Liliane Galley, highlighting meaningful challenges faced by families navigating the complexities of digital media.
professionals working with young people and their families have reported ”major issues” in ensuring appropriate and secure digital engagement, especially given the swift pace of technological change. The postulate calls for a detailed assessment of current prevention and support measures, aiming to pinpoint gaps in the promotion of essential digital and media literacy skills.
“The problem is too often reduced to excessive screen time alone, when it refers to difficulties of a much greater magnitude,” stated Deputy Liliane Galley. This sentiment underscores a growing recognition that the challenges extend beyond simply limiting time spent online.
The Council of state, through Minister of Health Philippe demierre, has expressed its commitment to addressing these concerns in an “optimal and sustainable” manner. An “exhaustive” inventory of existing resources will be compiled, followed by a “complete” analysis of unmet needs within the canton.
The study aims to provide a clear overview of the current support system and identify areas where further investment and growth are required to better equip families in Fribourg with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the digital world safely and effectively. The goal is to empower parents, who frequently enough feel helpless in the face of these evolving challenges, with the resources they need to support their children’s digital wellbeing.
