Pakistanis Return from Iran: Ongoing Repatriation – February Updates

April 1, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A steady stream of Pakistani nationals continued to return from Iran on Wednesday, marking the 33rd consecutive day of repatriation efforts coordinated by Pakistani authorities amid heightened regional tensions. Forty individuals crossed the border at Gabd Rimdan, bringing the total number of returnees through that crossing to 2,755, officials reported.

The influx of returning citizens is occurring as Pakistan navigates a complex geopolitical landscape, simultaneously attempting to mediate a potential de-escalation between the United States and Iran while also confronting a recent escalation of conflict with Afghanistan. At the Taftan border crossing, 4,077 people have re-entered Pakistan since February 28, contributing to an overall total of 6,832 returnees through both crossings.

The returning Pakistanis represent a diverse cross-section of individuals, including seafarers, pilgrims, laborers, students, traders and expatriates residing in Iran. Their return follows a period of increased instability in the region, prompted by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, and comes as Pakistan seeks to play a more prominent role in regional diplomacy.

Pakistan has offered its capital, Islamabad, as a venue for potential negotiations between U.S. And Iranian negotiators, with President Donald Trump stating on Tuesday that “great progress” was being made toward talks, a claim Tehran has disputed. According to NBC News, Trump also indicated that a deal isn’t necessarily required for the conflict to end. Pakistan’s motivation to host these talks extends beyond regional influence; a disruption to oil and gas imports via the Strait of Hormuz, potentially caused by Iranian action, would significantly impact the Pakistani economy.

This diplomatic push is not occurring in isolation. Just days prior, on March 29th, Pakistan hosted a meeting of foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt in Islamabad, signaling a coordinated regional effort to de-escalate the conflict. According to Al Jazeera, the meeting aimed to establish a framework for direct talks between the U.S. And Iran. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also engaged directly with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, holding two phone conversations in the past five days focused on de-escalation and building trust, a key concern voiced by the Iranian leader.

Pezeshkian reportedly expressed skepticism regarding past negotiations with the U.S., citing previous attacks on Iran during those talks as evidence of a lack of commitment from Washington. He stressed the need for confidence-building measures before considering direct dialogue. The Islamabad meeting followed Yemen’s Houthi rebels entering the conflict with attacks on Israel, and the arrival of U.S. Marines in the region, further complicating the situation.

While the return of Pakistani nationals continues, and diplomatic efforts intensify, the situation remains fluid. No date has been set for potential U.S.-Iran talks, and Iran has not confirmed any negotiations are planned.
