Sapper Veniana Caumatalevu has made history at the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Engineers Regiment’s Trade Training School, becoming the first female trainee to win the Best Trainee in Carpentry Award.

Milestone Graduation at the Engineers Regiment

The 23-year-old from Navisara, Burebasaga, Rewa, secured the milestone as 57 trainees graduated from the school at the Engineers Regiment grounds. Sapper Caumatalevu acknowledged that one of her principal hurdles during the program involved adapting to a male-dominated environment and working closely alongside male trainees. Rather than letting the dynamic deter her, she used it as fuel.

“It doesn’t hold me back; it challenges me to keep moving forward to succeed,” Sapper Caumatalevu said.

Background and Training Modules

Sapper Caumatalevu has maternal links to Vatukarasa, Conua, Nadroga, and completed her secondary education at Sigatoka Andhra Sangam College prior to enlisting in the RFMF. One of five siblings, she credited much of her drive to the sacrifices of her single mother, who raised the family. She also thanked the Trade Training School instructors for their guidance throughout the course.

The 57 graduates completed technical instruction spanning Carpentry, Block Laying, and Plastering, with final assessments administered by Fiji National University instructors.

Official Remarks and Institutional Vision

Australian Defence Force Defence Adviser to Fiji Colonel Henry Stimson served as the chief guest for the ceremony, addressing graduates, family members, and distinguished guests. Colonel Stimson noted that the Trade Training School continues to fulfill the vision established on August 2, 1974, under the leadership of then Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.

“I would like to acknowledge the members of the Engineers Regiment and the instructors of the Fiji National University for their dedication and commitment to the TTS, and to congratulate them on the successful delivery of this course,” Colonel Stimson said.

Colonel Stimson added that the curriculum fortified the graduates’ practical capabilities, setting a foundation for future career paths. The graduation ceremony proceeded with final assessments concluded and certificates awarded.
