Pakistan, Egypt Forge Deeper Ties Amidst UN Summit

Defense, Trade Cooperation Takes Center Stage in New York Discussions

Pakistan and Egypt have solidified plans to enhance collaboration across critical sectors, including defense and trade, following a high-level meeting in New York. The discussions occurred on the fringes of a significant United Nations summit focused on the Palestinian cause.

Bilateral Cooperation Bolstered

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, met with his Egyptian counterpart, FM Dr. Badr Abdelatty, on Monday. The Pakistani foreign ministry reported that both nations committed to strengthening their partnership in defense, commerce, and various other key areas. They emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation in fields such as medicine, minerals, defense, trade, and investment.

The ministers also recognized the necessity of improving connectivity between their countries to foster economic integration and facilitate increased trade. Plans for future high-level exchanges were confirmed by both sides.

The engagement between Ishaq Dar and Dr. Badr Abdelatty comes as 147 UN member states now recognize Palestine, a significant majority underscoring shifting global dynamics. Britannica notes the long-standing international debate over Palestinian statehood.

Shared Support for Palestine

During their meeting, the foreign ministers reaffirmed their steadfast support for the Palestinian people and their pursuit of a just cause. The Pakistani foreign ministry stated that both leaders stressed the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza and an immediate halt to hostilities.

“The two ministers underscored the urgent need for unimpaired humanitarian access, an immediate cessation of Israeli hostilities, and expressed hope for a meaningful and constructive outcome of the International Conference on the Two-State Solution.”
