São Paulo, Brazil – An inquiry into rape allegations against television presenter Otávio Mesquita has been archived by the Attorney General’s Office, following an appeal by the complainant, comedian Juliana Oliveira.
According to a statement released by the agency, the case was closed. The public Prosecutor’s Office (MPSP) stated, “As this is a procedure relating to privacy rights, there is no way to send anything related to the investigation.”
Oliveira’s defense expressed dismay, stating thay “deplore the fact that a video containing explicit and repeated images of sexual assaults, including an express confession by the aggressor, is considered by the Public Prosecutor’s Office as something insignificant, irrelevant, banal and insufficient to initiate criminal procedural instruction.”
CNN Brazil reports that Mesquita’s defense confirmed the case’s conclusion. “She lost, and I never went through that! But now we continue our life as always correct,” a representative stated.
The complaint, filed in March, alleged “libidinous acts using physical force” by Mesquita in front of an audience during the production of SBT‘s The Noite, where Oliveira worked as a stage assistant. Prosecutor Priscila Longarini Alves initially requested a police investigation on April 2, citing “elements that require further investigation regarding the practice of possible infringements against sexual dignity.”
