Oppo & Honor Foldables: Crease-Free Displays Teased for New Phones

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

The race to eliminate the display crease in foldable smartphones is intensifying, with both Honor and Oppo unveiling early looks at devices that appear to significantly minimize, if not eliminate, the visible line that has long plagued the technology. Honor is set to formally launch its Magic V6 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) on March 1st, while Oppo is teasing its Find N6, rumored to be a replacement for the cancelled OnePlus Open 2.

Honor has been particularly aggressive in its pre-launch marketing, sharing images and videos that showcase the Magic V6’s design. Honor executive Wang Fei shared images on Weibo demonstrating a foldable device with a seemingly absent crease, according to reports. The company is touting a “Super Steel Hinge” designed to improve durability, while too maintaining battery life, a slim profile, and IP68/69 dust and water resistance. A durability test involving a zipline challenge is planned to demonstrate the device’s robustness, with results expected by March 1, 2026.

Oppo’s approach has been more subtle, with a video shared by Sparrows News showing behind-the-scenes footage of the Find N6’s production. The video reportedly demonstrates that the Find N6 exhibits no crease even after undergoing 170,000 folds during automated testing. This suggests a significant improvement in hinge and display technology, addressing a common concern with foldable devices – the crease becoming more pronounced over time.

Both companies are utilizing advanced materials in their designs. Honor claims its Magic V6 incorporates a “2800MPa HONOR Super Steel,” which the company states is the strongest specialty steel used in any commercial device. The device also features a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective display with a low 1.5 percent reflection rate, likely on the cover display, and utilizes ultra-thin glass (UTG) for the flexible inner display – a technology also employed by Samsung.

The push for crease-free foldables comes as other manufacturers, including Samsung and potentially Apple, are also reportedly focusing on minimizing the crease in their upcoming foldable models. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Wide Fold are expected to address this issue, as is Apple’s rumored first foldable device. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold was the first foldable with an IP68 certification, but faced durability concerns, particularly regarding its hinge.

While the teasers and initial demonstrations are promising, the real-world performance and long-term durability of these devices remain to be seen. Honor’s Magic V6 is scheduled for launch on March 1st at MWC, but a firm release date for the Oppo Find N6 has not yet been announced.
