Ohio State Stuns Top-Ranked Michigan Hockey 5-2
The top-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday evening, October 31, falling 5-2 to Ohio State at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Jayden Perron Streaks End as Michigan Drops Game Eight
NCAA scoring leader Jayden Perron saw his lengthy point streak come to an end at 13 games, alongside a nine-game goal streak. Michigan entered the contest having won the previous six meetings over the Buckeyes. The Wolverines started 7-0 in back-to-back years for the first time in program history before dropping game number eight in both campaigns.
Goaltender Jack Ivankovic recorded 27 saves while ceding three goals to the rival Buckeyes before two empty-netters sealed the final 5-2 margin. Ohio State improved to 3-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big Ten, while Michigan dropped to 7-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Special Teams and Second-Period Pressure Decide the Contest
Ohio State capitalized on a second-period power play after a too-many-men infraction against Michigan at 3:13. The home team broke the scoreless deadlock at 4:38 with a backhanded rebound swat, then doubled the lead at 7:37 through the five-hole.
Michigan captain Garrett Schifsky responded at 13:58 by redirecting a point shot from Henry Mews past the netminder. Ben Robertson earned the secondary assist on the play. Despite holding a 22-20 edge in faceoffs during the middle frame, the Wolverines remained behind 2-1 on the scoreboard.
Late Push Falls Short in Columbus
The Buckeyes extended their lead to 3-1 at 9:45 of the final frame off an odd-man rush. Michigan head coach Brandon Naurato pulled Ivankovic with under five minutes remaining in regulation, setting up a goal from Cole McKinney at 16:52 with an extra attacker.
Michael Hage and Landon DuPont assisted on McKinney’s sixth tally of the year, forcing the goaltender out of position. Ohio State immediately answered with two empty-net goals to secure the 32-28 edge in total shots on goal. The two teams return to the ice on Sunday night, November 1, at 7:30 p.m. for the series finale broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
