Uber Strike to Disrupt Rides Across New Zealand This Weekend
Kiwis planning to rely on Uber for transport this Saturday, September 13th, should prepare for meaningful disruptions as drivers nationwide walk off the job. The strike, running from 12:00am to 11:59pm, is expected to heavily impact pick-up adn drop-off zones at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch airports, with drivers refusing to accept rides.
The industrial action stems from concerns over driver earnings and working conditions. According to Scoop Business, many drivers are working 60-70 hours a week to make ends meet, citing “unfair” pay. Drivers are also protesting unfair cleaning fee reimbursements, excessive hours impacting health and safety, and a perceived lack of portrayal in Uber’s policies.
A Facebook post calling for drivers to gather at the three major airports to demonstrate solidarity has further fueled the planned disruption.
“Our action is about fairness and survival, not endangering others,” drivers stated in a message to Scoop. They have also expressed concern about potential increases in drink-driving incidents due to reduced ride availability, urging New Zealand Police and road safety authorities to be vigilant.
“We sincerely pray and hope that the public will stay safe during this period, and we call on Uber to address thes issues urgently so drivers can return to the road with dignity and fairness,” they added.
Passengers are advised to arrange alternative transportation, such as designated drivers, public transport,or other ride-sharing services, for travel this weekend.
