Over two days of closed sessions, scientists, former government officials, and retired military personnel briefed the laureates on the planet’s most devastating weaponry. The Inevitable AI-Nuclear Nexus

Artificial intelligence dominated discussions. Stanford professor **Scott Sagan**, recognized for his work on nuclear disarmament, stated during a press conference that “We’re entering a new world of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies influencing our daily life, but also influencing the nuclear world we live in.” The consensus among those present was that governments will inevitably integrate AI into nuclear weapon systems.

On a positive note, there is widespread agreement that current-generation AI like ChatGPT or Grok will not gain access to nuclear launch codes. **Wolfsthal** confirmed that despite “theological” differences among nuclear experts, they are united in their insistence on “effective human control over nuclear weapon decision-making.”

Potential for Misinformation and Escalation

Despite assurances on direct control, **Wolfsthal** has encountered concerning proposals for AI’s use within high-level government operations. He shared, “A number of people have said, ‘Well, look, all I want to do is have an interactive computer available for the president so he can figure out what Putin or Xi will do and I can produce that dataset very reliably. I can get everything that Xi or Putin has ever said and written about anything and have a statistically high probability to reflect what Putin has said.’”

This underscores a significant risk: the potential for AI to generate highly convincing but potentially misleading analyses of foreign leaders’ intentions, a scenario that could easily trigger miscalculation. For instance, a 2023 study by the RAND Corporation highlighted how AI-driven analysis of open-source intelligence could be manipulated to create false narratives, increasing the risk of unintended escalation in a crisis (RAND Corporation, 2023).
