Not only oil and gas, Medco targets 5,000 MW Clean Energy in 2025

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – One of the private companies engaged in the integrated energy and natural resources sector, PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MEDC), has a big target, which is not only to be the best in the national class, but also at the Southeast Asian level.

This was conveyed by the President Director of PT Medco Power Indonesia Eka Satria at the Indonesia EBTKE ConEx 2020 event, Friday (27/11/2020).

Eka said that oil and gas are the main pillars of the company, but the company is also developing new renewable energy-based power plants and mining.

In line with the increasingly intense campaign for clean energy in the world, Medco also targets to increase the capacity of new renewable energy-based power plants to 5,000 mega watts (MW) from 3,500 MW in the next five years.

“Our focus is to become one of the national pride energy companies not only in Indonesia, but also in Indonesia South East Asia (Southeast Asia). We have a target in the next five years to increase our 5,000 MW portfolio to focus on six areas, “he explained at the Indonesia EBTKE ConEx 2020 event, Friday (27/11/2020).

He said the additional capacity for the EBT-based power plant came from the Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant (330 MW), Bali PV (2×25 MW), Riau (275 MW), Ijen Geothermal (2×55 MW), Sumbawa PV ( 26 MW), and Sumbawa LNG to power (150-300 MW).

He believes that there are other renewable energies that must be developed, namely geothermal, solar, mini-hydro, and others. Medco, he added, is very serious in developing these renewable energy assets.

According to him, in its development Medco focuses on several types of energy sources, namely oil and natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and geothermal power plants (geothermal) which are one of the largest in the world.

In addition, Medco also has several LNG carrier projects for the needs of smelter projects in central Indonesia. Medco will also try electric vehicles (electric vehicle/ EV) which will be launched in Jakarta, Bali and Batam.

“We are currently implementing two to three projects focused on gas to power. We believe that to implement clean energy we must also be efficient, “he said.

Fundamentally, Indonesia has great potential for renewable energy, including geothermal of 29.5 giga watts (GW), 94.5 GW of water, 207.9 GW of solar, and 60.5 GW of wind.

“Solar (solar) from 207.9 GW. New 200 MW. Us push with our projects. From demand also great, see demand large, large population, there should be no issue of private parties developing business renewable this is us in line with this, “he said.

From the production side, Medco’s current oil and gas production is 115 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), 3,500 mega watts of electricity (MW), and 96 MIbs of copper. copper stockpile, and 42 goats gold stokcpile.

“We are currently in a transitional energy, yes, we all agree that in the future this world will use environmentally friendly energy,” he explained.

The homework in the future is how to achieve the energy mix target in which currently energy is mostly driven by oil and gas and coal. He admitted that he agreed to go that way. There are several things that must be done, especially a smooth transition.

“Gas is the solution to that direction and of course when it has energy renewable that intermittent also have to think about storage. We have four pillars, gas to power, geothermal, renewable, as well operation and maintenance (O&M), “he explained.
