Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89, Succeeded by Son Haakon VIII

August 28, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch and a reform-minded head of state, died on Friday, August 28, at the age of 89, according to the royal palace. His 53-year-old son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeds him on the throne as King Haakon VIII.

King Harald V Dies at 89

According to a statement from the royal court, King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. local time. The monarch had been receiving hospital treatment since mid-August for hemolytic anemia, a rare blood condition caused by the rapid destruction of red blood cells that triggers fatigue and shortness of breath. The palace had announced on Thursday that the king’s condition was extremely serious, prompting Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Mette-Marit, and their adult children to gather at his bedside.

National Mourning in Oslo

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store stated that he received the news with deep sorrow, noting in a public address that an entire nation mourns while remaining profoundly grateful for a long life devoted to Norway. According to the prime minister, the government planned to convene a conference shortly after the announcement and subsequently meet the new king at the royal palace.

Hundreds of well-wishers gathered outside the royal palace in Oslo overnight and through the morning, holding a vigil as the king’s health failed. Mourners laid down flowers, cards, cuddly toys, and Norwegian flags in the palace courtyard, while the official flag atop the building was lowered to half-mast. A motor procession later carried King Harald’s casket from Oslo University Hospital to the royal palace as crowds lined the streets.

A Legacy on the Throne

King Harald ascended the throne in 1991. Harald earned widespread public affection for his unassuming lifestyle and a unifying presence. Despite scaling back his official schedule in recent years following multiple health interventions—including the installation of a pacemaker and hospitalizations for infections—he consistently ruled out abdication, maintaining that his constitutional oath before the Norwegian parliament lasted for life.

Global Tributes Pour In

International leaders and fellow European royals offered immediate tributes following the announcement. British King Charles paid tribute to a towering figure who guided his country with warmth and humility, while Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf noted that the late king had been a good friend. Danish King Frederik and Queen Mary praised Harald’s warm personality and rock-solid calm, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described him as a true European.

The new monarch will deliver a short address broadcast on television, which parliament confirmed will focus on the monarch’s limited power.
