North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles After Rejecting Trump Overture

August 20, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Ten Missiles Fired Toward Eastern Waters

North Korea launched about 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters on Thursday, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The launches occurred from the North Korean capital region at around 5 p.m. on Thursday, as reported by the South Korean military. These projectiles traveled toward the eastern waters, intensifying regional tensions just a day after Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, rejected a U.S. decision to scale back joint military exercises.

Seoul and Tokyo Mobilize Immediate Response

South Korean military officials stated that the nation has bolstered its surveillance posture. Seoul is closely coordinating information on the launches with the United States and Japan.

In response to the missile activity, South Korea’s presidential national security council convened an emergency meeting. Following the session, the council issued a statement urging North Korea to halt ballistic missile launches, which are banned under United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Across the border, Japan’s prime minister’s office detected a suspected missile launch.

Diplomatic Friction Over Military Drills

President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises just before they began Monday. Pointing to South Korea’s failure to back him regarding the conflict in Iran, Trump also mentioned what he described as his positive rapport with Kim.

Kim Yo Jong dismissed Trump’s overture on Wednesday, saying it was not even worthy of comment. Maintaining that the exercises remain inherently provocative and aggressive, she noted this holds true despite any cuts to their scale and timeline. She warned in her remarks that Washington will miss out on its expected outcome if it assumes it can market this recent step as an act of purported goodwill.

Pyongyang Signals Window for Future Talks

She specifically pointed to a series of other military drills carried out by the U.S. and South Korea earlier this year, alongside South Korea’s push to introduce nuclear-powered submarines. Despite the rhetoric rejecting the current U.S. offer, Kim Yo Jong refrained from the typical North Korean reaction of fiery rhetoric. She said personal relations between her brother and Trump are “still excellent,” signaling that North Korea would want to wait for Trump to make bigger concessions before returning to talks.

Security Protocols and Trump’s Summit Outlook

When questioned by journalists on Wednesday regarding whether a meeting with Kim Jong Un would take place this year, Trump replied “Yeah, I will be,” while refusing to address inquiries about ongoing letter exchanges with Kim.
