Valley City, North Dakota - October 26, 2023 – The North Dakota State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently completed a project too restore a historic marker honoring Augusta Freeman Young, a pivotal figure in the association’s state founding, and the event underscores a broader commitment to preserving local history and expanding community outreach. The rededication, held in Valley City, comes as the DAR seeks to attract new members and amplify its work in genealogy, education, and patriotic endeavors across the state.
The original marker, dedicated in 1929, had been damaged-reportedly by a lawnmower-and was in need of replacement. The restoration effort, spearheaded by DAR members, not only preserves the memory of Young, who organized the first DAR chapter in North Dakota, but also symbolizes the organization’s enduring presence and forward momentum. ”she really could get it started,” stated DAR member Sidler, emphasizing Young’s instrumental role in establishing a thriving DAR presence in North Dakota.
Augusta Freeman Young founded the DAR chapter in Valley City on November 11, 1905, and served as its first regent. Her dedication laid the groundwork for the organization’s expansion throughout the state, now encompassing numerous chapters and thousands of members. The DAR’s mission centers on historic preservation, patriotism, and education, with initiatives ranging from supporting veterans to providing scholarships and promoting responsible citizenship.
The rededication ceremony served as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding historical landmarks and recognizing the contributions of pioneering women like Young. Beyond the marker itself, the DAR is actively working to engage new generations through genealogy workshops, educational programs in schools, and community service projects.
