NIH Budget Raised to $48.7B as Congress Rejects Trump’s Proposed Cuts

January 28, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

congressional appropriations committees largely rejected President Trump’s plans to cut and restructure the National Institutes of Health in their 2026 fiscal year spending bill.

A compromise bill released Tuesday allocates $48.7 billion to NIH, a $415 million increase from the 2025 fiscal year. The bill also includes provisions to block the management from reducing funding for research overhead. However, the White House secured a win with the continuation of a new funding strategy for multiyear grants, which led to fewer awards for scientists in 2025.
