New York Liberty Bolstered by Coaching Veteran
New Coaching Addition
The New York Liberty made significant changes this offseason, including the arrival of assistant coach Sonia Raman. The former MIT head coach and Memphis Grizzlies assistant brings a wealth of experience to the team.
At MIT, Raman earned the title of winningest coach, leading the Engineers to several NEWMAC Tournament victories and NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Following her twelve seasons at MIT, Raman joined the Grizzlies’ coaching staff under head coach Taylor Jenkins. The team achieved multiple fifty-win seasons during her tenure.
Head coach Sandy Brondello highlighted Raman’s offensive expertise, noting how it aligns with the Liberty’s core principles as the team continues to evolve. Raman shared how her time at MIT and with the Memphis Grizzlies have shaped her coaching philosophy.
“I’ve been really fortunate to be on this journey, and I think all of my experiences have been really unique,”

Bridging College and Pro Ball
Raman explained the differences between coaching in Division III women’s basketball versus the professional ranks. She emphasized how her experience with the Grizzlies prepared her for the WNBA. The NBA and WNBA share similarities. Raman is focused on efficiency in each phase of the game, with a focus on spacing and running habits.
Brondello values Raman’s NBA background. The team is seeking to establish a connection between the two leagues. The Liberty’s focus is on winning a championship.
The Pursuit of Excellence
Raman believes the Liberty are synonymous with excellence. The organization excels in every aspect, from the coaching staff to the players, she added. She also discussed the importance of continual growth.
The Liberty have been excelling this season. The team is leading the league in points per game. Raman‘s philosophy aligns with the team’s strategy, which includes pace and space. A 2024 study shows the Liberty are scoring an average of 88.7 points per game (WNBA Stats).

A Collaborative Approach
Raman embraces ongoing development. She frequently observes other coaches and their practices, seeking high-level ideas. She is focused on collaboration, always seeking to learn, observe, and listen.
Brondello enjoys developing assistant coaches. Roneeka Hodges, a former Liberty assistant, recently took on an expanded role with the Connecticut Sun and was promoted to associate head coach.
The Liberty have welcomed Andrew Wade, the new director of player development. Raman and Wade are neighbors, and they often check in with each other. Raman is exploring the city, enjoying its culture and food. She continues to watch basketball while not coaching.
With 30 games remaining, Raman’s goal is to contribute to the team’s success every day. She wants to make the team better, with a growth mindset focused on improving the offensive rating and player development.
