Two Pennsylvania State Troopers Shot Following Retail Theft and Chase
antrim Township, PA - New details have emerged following a shooting Wednesday evening in Franklin County that injured two Pennsylvania State Troopers. The incident began with a reported retail theft and escalated into a high-speed chase and armed confrontation, resulting in the death of one suspect.
According to court documents filed Thursday, Joshua Swift and Brandon McGowan were observed on surveillance footage allegedly stealing $1,066 worth of clothing from a local store. They were joined by William Foy, who authorities say also participated in the theft.
the trio fled in a Chevrolet van, which was later spotted on I-81 near Exit 16 by a Trooper. A pursuit ensued, and spike strips were deployed, bringing the van to a stop near Exit 3.
State Police report that Swift and McGowan complied with commands upon exiting the vehicle, but Foy allegedly opened fire on the Troopers, injuring two. Troopers returned fire, fatally shooting foy at the scene.
A subsequent search of the van revealed a significant quantity of drugs, including THC, unidentified white and brown powdery substances, and capsules containing unknown materials. Authorities also found a large sum of money and drug paraphernalia.
Swift and McGowan are facing felony charges of retail theft, conspiracy, and manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, along with two misdemeanor drug charges. Both are currently held in Franklin County Jail with bail denied. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for October 21.
As of Thursday, one injured Trooper has been released from the hospital, while the other remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to updates from WellSpan and Pennsylvania State Police.
Statements of support and concern have been issued by Governor Josh Shapiro, Franklin County Commissioners, and the Pennsylvania state Troopers Association.
Antrim Township is located a few miles from the Pennsylvania-Maryland border and approximately 70 miles southwest of Harrisburg.
