Netflix docuseries explores Matthew Perry addiction battle
Nearly three years after the death of “Friends” star Matthew Perry, a new three-part Netflix documentary titled “The One About Matthew Perry” debuted on October 27, revealing that the late actor spent approximately 7 million dollars on his battle with addiction, serieously.ouest-france.fr reported.
The Financial and Personal Toll of Addiction
The documentary, directed by Mary Robertson, explores the actor’s life and struggles through the perspectives of his family members, friends, and former colleagues. Among the disclosures, Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, detailed the massive financial resources her brother committed to his recovery. According to Bowick, the actor spent 7 million dollars attempting to achieve sobriety, showing how seriously he approached his illness despite recurring relapses.
The toll of those struggles extended into his professional life on the set of the hit NBC sitcom. Roger Costillo, described as one of Perry’s best friends, noted that production on “Friends” paused in 2001 so Perry could enter rehab. Bowick explained that her brother carried significant guilt over these disruptions because he knew the livelihoods of the cast and crew depended on the production schedule.
During a 2002 interview with Larry King featured in the documentary, Perry discussed that period of his life. He stated that he needed to focus entirely on sobriety and asked producers for the maximum time they could give him without guaranteeing his return. Producers ultimately chose to shoot around his absences.
Filming the Wedding Amid Ongoing Treatment
The challenges of maintaining privacy and health came to a head during the filming of Chandler and Monica’s wedding. Perry commuted between a Malibu rehab facility and the set.
Bowick recalled watching the ceremony from the audience and wondering if it would be the only real wedding she would ever witness for her brother. She noted that when Perry delivered his vows to Courteney Cox, the emotion visible in his eyes was entirely real. Behind the scenes, however, family members harbored constant anxiety over his fragile health, with Bowick admitting she eventually began viewing his addiction as a terminal illness.

Cast Reunites for Reunion Special and Private Funeral
The pressure of returning to the spotlight resurfaced during the 2021 HBO Max reunion special. Bowick and close friend Kevin Pollak noted that Perry appeared visibly nervous and strained during the production.
Following his death in 2023, the private funeral brought together the core cast of the series. Bowick described Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer arriving together. Aniston was the first to embrace her, after which all five actors approached the open casket, holding hands and standing around their late colleague in tears.
Aside from his battles with production schedules and health, the documentary also highlights Perry’s efforts to assist others facing similar struggles. Tim Harrington, whom Perry met at a support meeting in 2001, recalled that Perry welcomed him into his home and allowed him to live there when Harrington was on the verge of relapsing and living in his car, a gesture Harrington credits with saving his life.
